Sandra Atkins

I create felted “paintings” from wool and other natural fibers using a process called needle felting.  The wool creates a unique, warm texture that is very appealing when seen in person.  Some of the pieces are also very sculptural in nature which gives a lot of character to animal subjects.  Many of my techniques are self-taught and have been developed over the years since I began needle felting in 2014.

Felting is a process where wool fibers, which have microscopic scales, are rubbed against each other causing them to catch and lock into place to create a denser material called felt. Needle felting is a process which uses barbed needles to interlock the wool fibers so that they adhere to one another.  I am able to create both 3-dimensional sculptures and 2-dimensional “paintings” by repeatedly stabbing the barbed felting needle into the fiber.

In addition to showing my work at local art shows and retail venues, including the South Carolina Artisans Center, I take commissions through my website.  I also create custom 2-dimensional felted dog portraits.
